CALL FOR PAPERS

CALL FOR PAPERS
3rd International Second Life Community Convention (SLCC07)
August 24-26, 2007, Chicago, USA
Track: "Business in Second Life"
http://slcc2007.wordpress.com/

SCOPE
The emergence of virtual worlds and the Web 3.D changes to way of doing business. Web 3.D is the synonym for internet based virtual worlds, where people can create own 3D ‘virtual’ personalities. One of the most famous of these virtual worlds is Second Life. It is undergoing an evolution similar to that of the Internet in the mid ninetieth and it might impact profoundly the way people cooperate, communicate and collaborate and conduct business. The recent entering of companies such as Toyota, American Apparel, Nissan, or Adidas on Second Life is a first indication for the upcoming role of this platform for the next generation of conducting business online.
The conference provides a forum for industry, academia, and government to present their latest findings in virtual worlds like Second Life and the underlying technology to support those applications. Therefore, we invite contributions (research paper, working paper, work-in progress) from a broad spectrum of disciplines including economics, management, business, marketing, finance, information systems, and computer sciences.

I'm interested in posting a paper that proposes a new model for the secondlife business presence. In the early days of the web, web sites were basically billboards. There were not even forms, much less real interactivity.

Many of the business presences in secondlife are showing parallels, but it's not because of limitations of the technology. Businesses are not consistently successfully keying into the community aspects of secondlife.

I propose that the correct metaphor for a consulting business to bring outside businesses into secondlife should not be the ad agency or the web developer, but the international professional services company.

The professional services group acts as the deputy for a client company entering a new country of operations.

Their job is to find facilities, personnel, and create and maintain necessary infrastructure to create a presence for the subsidiary or branch office.

Their job is also to orient the company to the culture, import/export restrictions, important contacts, business regulations, and cultural details to best ensure the success, and the customer acceptance, of a foreign company.

A professional services group needs to have a thorough understanding of the business, regulatory, logistical/technical, and cultural context of both the client and the new country of operations -- in our case, a deep understanding of RL and SL business.

I think that this metaphor allows us to compare the successes and failures of companies that have already been brought into secondlife, and understand what services and savvy a consulting company must have to create the best "import" of a company into the secondlife environment.

I've got some examples of already implemented business presences, and some great how-to ideas both for consultants and for businesses trying to select a consulting group.

This is a paper that proposes more questions for further research, but establishes a new vocabulary for the discussion of secondlife business.

Would this be of interest? And, how much further than this would I have to elaborate an abstract?

Thanks!

google gives me no chance to comment with my correct account.. (goooglegirl is just a dummy account)...sorry for that!

I´m working on a proposal of a work-in progress case study about marketing issues for brands in second life.

The case study of a second life project follows an integrated communication approach to an Inside-Out/Outside-In principle.

Virtual products for second life are used as brand vehicle to integrate the second life activities into the existing communication channels of the company.

The website of the brand (online-shop) plays a major role as bridge to guide costumers from the real life into the second life. Due to that fact, technology items related to web 2.0 and second life (datatransfer from web to inworld, open source client technology)should be discussed within that case study also!!

hopefully the proposal is finished tomorrow morning (Berlin time) and of course I am really exciting about your opinion and if this case study is interesting for the business track?

greetings from berlin

ps: shavas proposal sounds really interesting, to me it seems shava could bring up new aspects and maybe dimensions of secondlife business, new ways for realising outside businesses inworld are urgently needed! hope to see and hear something from shava at the slcc!!
